The Child of Goodness is a medieval tale set in 1450s Visby, Sweden, where piety and fear govern everyday life. Through a comprehensive cover design and interior illustration, the project captures the stark atmosphere of a world where every movement is scrutinized and every sound has consequences.
The project features a highly detailed interior map of Visby that required over 80 hours of meticulous illustration. While inspired by the real historical geography of the Swedish town, the map is rendered as a subjective, black-and-white interpretation – reflecting the city as seen through the eyes of the protagonist. On the exterior, the cover employs a deep palette and symbolic illustrations of bears, feathers, and daggers to visually represent the hidden layers of the story. By combining these hand-drawn motifs with classic typography, the design seeks to immerse the reader in the tension between religious rigidity and internal rebellion.
